Cents in the City
It’s back to school at our house. September is all about organization. This means crossing the “to-dos” off my list which I’ve been avoiding through the dog days of summer. Here are 3 reasons to put updating your Will on the priority list this fall.
1. A Will gives you the ability to clearly indicate caregivers for your kiddies. Not having a Will means you’re relying on family members to apply to the courts for guardianship. Do you want the courts to decide who the best fit is?
2. Avoid nightmares and delays – not having a Will in place will guarantee months if not years of headaches and delays in getting your assets to the people you care about.
3. Powers of Attorney are equally important when updating your Will. Who will make financial and health decisions on your behalf if you are alive but incapacitated? Are the individuals you named as POAs 10 years ago still alive and living in Ontario? There are complications if you’ve named someone who now lives abroad.
I always recommend my clients work with a lawyer who specializes in estate planning investigation process. Need a good estate lawyer? Contact me for details.
